Position description The Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley seeks an Assistant Project Scientist to work with Professor Ritchie and Professor Asta to assist in the premier experimental work in our DOE-funded research program on Damage-Tolerance of Structural Materials.
The successful candidate will be in charge of experimental studies, specifically mechanical testing and microscopy at cryogenic to elevated temperatures (in particular, J-based resistance-curve measurements), and the involvement of the supervision of students. The candidate will oversee the development of mechanical testing capabilities in extreme conditions, particularly J-based resistance-curve measurements at extremely high temperatures (>1473 K), extremely low temperatures (< 77 K), and high strain rate deformation (106 /s).
The candidate will also play a major role in writing the papers and giving technical presentations based on this work.

Qualifications Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
PhD or equivalent international degree
Preferred qualifications - PhD degree in Materials Science and Engineering, or related field.
- Postdoc experience after PhD is desirable.
- Experience in mechanical testing at cryogenic and elevated temperatures.
- Experience in nonlinear-elastic fracture toughness measurements and analysis.
- Experience in nanoindentation measurements and analysis.
- Understanding of the mechanistic aspects of the fracture of metallic alloys.
- Ability to do microstructural analysis by electron microscopy (EDS, EBSD, and fractography.) Application Requirements Document requirements
